Bloomberg Considers Inclusion of Indian Government Bonds in Global Aggregate Index
9/19/2025

Bloomberg Index Services is seeking investor feedback on the potential inclusion of Indian government securities in its flagship Global Aggregate Bond Index, according to Reuters. The move, if finalized, could significantly boost India’s standing in international debt markets.
Inclusion in major global bond indices often leads to a surge in foreign portfolio inflows, as large institutional investors benchmarked to these indices adjust their portfolios. Such inflows would likely increase demand for Indian government bonds, potentially pushing yields lower and easing the government’s borrowing costs.
Analysts note that this step would also enhance the visibility of Indian government debt and deepen its integration with global financial markets. It follows similar developments with other major index providers in recent years, highlighting India’s growing importance in the global fixed-income landscape.
Market participants and policymakers will closely watch Bloomberg’s consultation process, as a positive outcome could reshape the foreign investment landscape for India’s sovereign debt.
